Sorry, Disney — you can’t have Lin-Manuel Miranda all to yourself anymore. The Hamilton creator has been diversifying his studio interests, recently getting behind an upcoming television adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy. Now, he’s adding another project to his increasingly busy — and impressive — schedule, providing a whopping 11 original songs for Sony’s new animated film, Vivo.
Disney is taking another one of the many (many, many, many) live-action projects from their growing to-do pile and officially placing it in the queue, as the studio appears to have found a director for their long-developing Cruella project. Like Maleficent, this one offers a bit of a twist, re-imagining the classic 101 Dalmatians story through the eyes of its villain, Cruella De Vil, with Emma Stone set to play the titular role.
Every year, Forbes releases rankings of the highest-paid and highest-grossing actors around the world, but their most interesting list comes a little later in the year when the publication unveils their annual rundown of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood. Unsurprisingly, Johnny Depp’s name tops the list for the second year in a row — and yet, sadistic Hollywood executives just keep right on putting him and his big dumb hats in big budget blockbusters.
Not long after setting Mike DeLuca and Jennifer Todd as showrunners, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has officially selected the host of the 2017 Oscars telecast. Drumroll please…oh, forget it, you saw the headline. It’s Jimmy Kimmel, comedian, host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and, most importantly, the guy who brought you celebrities reading mean tweets about themselves for your entertainment.
As it turns out, Jackie Kennedy didn’t just have great taste in fashion and furnishings — she was also something of a cinephile. A newly-released list reveals every film the former First Lady watched during her all-too-brief time in the White House, from home movies and TV specials (including her own) to James Bond and, in an eyebrow-raising move, the Marilyn Monroe classic The Misfits.
Drew Pearce’s impressive writing credits include Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which should get you pretty excited for his directorial debut. Adding a little extra intrigue to Hotel Artemis is Jodie Foster, who has officially signed on to headline the highly-anticipated crime thriller, which is based on an original screenplay by Pearce.
For eons humankind hath yearned for the male equivalent to Meryl Streep, and though we searched for many a fortnight, not one could be found. But lo! From Broadway on high came Lin-Manuel Miranda with the generous gift of Hamilton: An American Musical, and our long search came to a joyful end. Seriously, though, this guy is everywhere and does everything, and he’s adding yet another ambitious project to his plan for world domination.
The notion of an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff has been floating around for years, perpetuated in part by Ewan McGregor, who played the young version of Luke Skywalker’s mentor in the Star Wars prequels. As recently as last month, McGregor was still talking up the concept with his idea for a two-part spinoff. Lucasfilm has kept unusually quiet about the whole thing, and according to a new rumor, we might finally know why.
This is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a Marvel and Star Wars crossover: Tom Holland, aka your new Spider-Man, is in talks to join Daisy Ridley, aka Rey, in Chaos Walking — the upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller based on the best-selling YA novel by Patrick Ness. In related news, maybe the real post-apocalyptic future is one in which all teen movie franchises are based on post-apocalyptic YA books; time is a flat circle and the apocalypse has already happened and we are all already dead. Happy Monday!
Ivan Reitman ain’t afraid of no underwhelming box office numbers. The original Ghostbusters director and producer of this year’s reboot says that despite weak returns for Paul Feig’s film, “there’s going to be many other” movies in the franchise. That statement contradicts a previous report, which indicated that Sony is focusing their energy on the animated Ghostbusters film and a new TV series, while the possibility of a sequel to Feig’s reboot had become very unlikely.
