‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Review: A Mythological Masterpiece From Laika

Anomalisa is a tough stop-motion act to follow (to be fair, Charlie Kaufman typically sets the bar pretty high), but if anyone is suited for the task it’s Laika, the studio behind delightful animated features like ParaNorman and The Boxtrolls. Their latest effort blends Laika’s usual wit and charm with stunning visuals matched by an equally remarkable journey, making Kubo and the Two Strings an epic worthy of the eponymous character’s vibrant mythology.

Ben Whishaw in Talks to Join Emily Blunt in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

In what is shaping up to be the most pleasant of Disney’s new live-action offerings, the consistently pleasant Ben Whishaw is in talks to join the similarly quite pleasing Emily Blunt and the equally personable Lin-Manuel Miranda in the indubitably enjoyable Mary Poppins sequel. It may be fairly unsurprising news, but that doesn’t make it any less wonderful.

‘Justice League’ Star Henry Cavill Teases Black Superman Costume in New Photo

Look, in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a Goodyear tire! No, it’s the new Superman costume from Justice League. Seemingly confirming rumors that the Man of Steel will be wearing a black suit in Zack Snyder’s next superhero epic, Henry Cavill shared a new close-up shot of the Superman costume from the set of the upcoming film — and although you can’t see the entire thing, it is most certainly black.

Jason Momoa in Talks For ‘The Crow’ Reboot, Which Is Still Happening

Like the film’s eponymous hero, The Crow reboot refuses to die. After suffering a series of setbacks — including director and casting changes and a highly-publicized studio bankruptcy — Relativity Media has reportedly renewed their commitment to the long-developing remake of the ’90s cult classic, with Jason Momoa now in talks to play the lead role.

‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ Will Return With ‘The Silver Chair’

Three years after it was first announced, The Silver Chair is finally making its way to the big screen. Sony and TriStar will back the long-developing project, which is the next chapter in the Chronicles of Narnia series. As was the case a few years ago, Life of Pi scribe David Magee will script the new sequel, which has yet to secure a director.

‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Reportedly in Development at Warner Bros.

Despite Zack Snyder’s assertion that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is basically a sequel to Man of Steel (it’s totally not), fans are still wondering if and when we might see Superman get a proper standalone follow-up. But Warner Bros.’ DC slate is fairly crowded with two Justice League movies and solo films for Wonder Woman, The Flash, Batman, Aquaman and Cyborg. Last we heard, WB put plans for Man of Steel 2 on “permanent hold,” while Snyder and Henry Cavill expressed interest in the sequel if they could find the time for it. And it looks like that time may be approaching.

Ava DuVernay Will Be the First Woman of Color to Direct a 100 Million Dollar Film

By now you’re well-aware that Hollywood has a real problem with female directors, who are typically not given the same chances (read: jobs, budgets, et al.) as their male peers. Ditto for people of color. That makes today’s news particularly heartening, as Ava DuVernay is set to become the first woman of color to helm a $100 million dollar film — a precedent that could (and should) pave the way for studios to hand more big budget blockbusters over to women.

First Look at the New ‘Star Wars’ Ship From ‘Rogue One’

Although Rogue One takes place shortly before the events of A New Hope, it does feature some tech and vehicles that we haven’t previously seen in the Star Wars universe. That’s already inspired a bit of nitpicking among fans, but we can all probably agree that this new addition is pretty cool: It’s called a U-Wing, and we’re going to be seeing a lot more of it when Rogue One hits theaters in December.

Mark Ruffalo Is Already Done Filming ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Taika Waititi didn’t have footage to show from Thor: Ragnarok during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel a couple of weeks ago (though he did show a delightful short film) — you know, since he’s only been filming the sequel for about a month. So it might seem a little surprising that Mark Ruffalo has already wrapped his part in the upcoming film, which sees the Hulk teaming up with Thor for what the actor has described as a buddy road movie. Is Ruffalo’s part smaller than we thought?
