The music industry was a much different place in the year 2000: Back then, Beyonce was still part of a little R&B trio called Destiny's Child and Aaliyah was both a beloved pop star and actress on the rise. Sixteen years later, Beyonce is one of the most iconoclastic modern music artists on the planet, while Aaliyah, who died in 2001, remains a pop culture legend remembered as much for her once-meteoric rising star status as her tragic passing.

Thursday (August 25) marked the15th anniversary of Aaliyah's death, and on Instagram, the Lemonade maker shared a sweet throwback to a moment she shared with the late singer on the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet, which Beyonce co-hosted.

"Miss Aaliyah, how you doing girl?" the "Bootylicious" artists asks her interview subject in the video.

"What's up baby? It's so good to see you again!" Aaliyah replies, beaming.

"What are you looking forward to seeing...tonight?" Beyonce asks.

"Tonight? I wanna see D'Angelo perform. He's fine, he's hot. Sexy!" the One in a Million singer responds, giggling.

Bey agrees, laughing: "Girl, I'm with ya, 'cause you know he fine!"

On August 25, 2001, a plane carrying Aaliyah from an island in the Bahamas, where the artist had just finished filming her final music video for "Rock the Boat," crashed, killing her and her recording crew.

Released in July 2001, roughly a month before her untimely passing, Aaliyah's self-titled third studio record hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
