The Best Movies of 2016 (According to Matt Singer)

What a difference six months makes. Back in the summer, the world of film was all gloom and doom. Television was great; the movies were terrible. One respected critic even speculated that someday the world would look back at 2016 as “the year that movies died.”

George Lucas Saw ‘Rogue One’ and Liked It, So Gareth Edwards Had the Best Weekend

When a director inherits a franchise from another more seasoned, more beloved filmmaker, there’s bound to be some anxiety about whether or not their predecessor will like the finished project. Did I get it right? they ask themselves. Did I do their legacy justice? Gareth Edwards, still pretty new to the blockbuster scene after taking the reins of 2014’s franchise starter/reviver Godzilla, has some galaxy-sized shoes to fill as the director of the upcoming Star Wars anthology film Rogue One. But he doesn’t have to worry too much anymore, because George Lucas has seen the movie, and given it his hearty blessing.

Fort Worth PD Enlists Empire Stormtroopers for New Recruitment Video

Over the past couple of years, policemen have fallen pretty far out of favor with the American people. The U.S. police force is in dire need of a little PR management, something that shows their sense of humor and gives a more human, relatable slant to the boys in blue.

Kathleen Kennedy Clarifies Her Comments on a Female ‘Star Wars’ Director

Earlier this week, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made headlines when she suggested that the time was not quite right for a female Star Wars director. In our own write-up of her comments, we noted that the reasoning behind Kennedy’s comments was sound, if not a little depressing: there’s an added degree of pressure on any female director, and the last thing Kennedy wants to do is put someone in a situation where they cannot succeed. Still, with so many male filmmakers seemingly being thrust from anonymity to nine-figure productions, Kennedy’s comments also hinted at an institutional double-standard that is a source of frustration to so many.

Weekend Box Office Report: Audiences Says “You’re Welcome” for Another ‘Moana’ Box Office Win

This weekend’s box office was essentially the hangover from last week’s big holiday: the numbers are a little smaller, very little in the top 10 actually moved around, and the only new release didn’t even come close to threatening the dominion of Moana and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Women Directors Out in Full Force on Sight and Sound’s Year-End Critic Poll

The end-of-year cavalcade of awards bestowments and ranked lists continues apace today, with one of the more prestigious critical bodies weighing in. Sight and Sound, the official film magazine of the BFI, runs an annual poll of United Kingdom-based writers and compiles a list of the year’s 20 finest films from the results. (Naturally, their cutoff dates for what qualifies as a “2016 release” are based on British release dates, which is how Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper landed on this list, though it will receive a U.S. run in the spring.) It’s a nicely balanced list well-stocked with festival favorites, but the most notable (and heartening) aspect of the ranking must be the strong showing from female filmmakers, who make up three of the top five selections.

John F. Kennedy is probably the most well-documented president in history, with tons of documentaries and conspiracy theory History Channel specials and books and what have you dedicated to the life and legacy of one of this country’s most tragically beloved presidents. ‘Jurassic World 2’ Casts ‘The Get Down’s Justice Smith, Probably Sans Afro and Turntable

Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down was Netflix’s most luxuriously expensive show to date, but didn’t make as many waves during its premiere as it was probably meant to, the buzz trickling away pretty quickly after Part 1 was released earlier this fall. But it did rocket its star, Justice Smith, into the spotlight, as he’s now been cast in J. A. Bayona’s Jurassic World sequel.
