Viola Davis Joins Steve McQueen’s Heist Film ‘Widows’

Steve McQueen won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, 2013’s Best Picture, and then he pretty much vanished. He’s done a couple little things here and there, but no significant follow-up. That project finally seems to be materializing, as Variety reports that McQueen is working on a film called Widows and he’s lined up an Oscar nominee as one of his big stars: Viola Davis, she of Suicide Squad and How to Get Away With Murder and the upcoming Fences, which looks like it could be an Academy Award contender as well.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ Enters the Award Season Fray

While Marvel fans are no-doubt pleased with the critical and box office success of the movies to date, spend enough time in the comic book communities and you do hear people complain that movies like Captain America: Winter Soldier were not given more consideration for major awards at the end of the year. After all, Marvel has brought in some of the most talented filmmakers and actors working in the business today; why wouldn’t the Academy want to recognize some of the talent on display in these films?

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘The Magnificent Seven’ Lives Up to the Adjective in Its Title

September is traditionally the month of box office quiet after the summer movie season concludes, a chance for studios to unload movies that wouldn’t find their audience elsewhere in the year and an opportunity for everyone to recharge their batteries before the big movies return in October. But nobody told Sully, which is a bigger hit than most of the summer fare released in 2016. And now, nobody told The Magnificent Seven, which leapt into the number one spot with a very strong debut.

‘Rings’ and ‘Friday the 13th’ Sequels Both Delayed

It’s not a great time to be a horror sequel. Blair Witch made just $9.5 in its debut in theaters last weekend (less than Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 made in its opening weekend 15 years ago), and now Variety reports that Paramount is pushing back two long-delayed installments in the horror franchises for The Ring and Friday the 13th.

What’s Expiring From Netflix: October 2016

Sure, there’s a ton of great titles headed to Netflix Instant in October, but you better watch the ones that are expiring first. The time for a Back to the Future marathon is now. Or why not revisit Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man one last time? You also better bump The Exorcist to the top of your queue and reschedule your scary movie night; it’s gonna be long gone before Halloween hits. Also, The Truman Show is leaving, a movie that simply cannot be watched too many times.

New Netflix Instant Releases: October 2016

The best thing about the beginning of a new month is the slew of new releases and classics coming to Netflix Instant. Wishing you could have a rom-com double feature? Good, because now you can with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Bummed you missed two art house releases, Greek comedy Chevalier and last year’s Palme d’Or winner Dheepan? No problem. Have you been itching for a good cry and Titanic movie night? Wait no longer! (Sorry, I buried the lead. Titanic coming to Netflix is all that matters.) On top of those, the new season of dystopian tech thriller Black Mirror hits Netflix Instant next month, plus Christopher Guest‘s Mascots and Ava DuVernay’s documentary The 13th. It’s gonna be a good month of you, your TV and your couch.

Mark Wahlberg Is Back with David O. Russell for a Father Stu Movie

David O. Russell has been quiet about his next big-screen feature, preoccupied with a TV series he’s working on with Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore. But it looks like we won’t have too long to wait to see his name in the multiplex once again, as Mark Wahlberg revealed in a Facebook Live chat earlier today that he was teaming up again with Russell for a biopic about Father Stu.

‘Hidden Figures’ Trailer: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae Win the Space Race

It’s still not easy for women in the STEM industry, and it was even harder in the 1960s. It’s rare to get a glimpse behind the scenes of auspicious historical events like the success of Project Mercury, and even rarer for the movie to look like so much fun. The new trailer for Hidden Figures gives us just that, with Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe portraying the real-life women who helped NASA get ahead in the Space Race that seems as honest to history as it is entertaining.
