What’s Leaving Netflix Instant: January 2017

Just as Netflix Instant giveth, so must Netflix Instant taketh away, and while there are plenty of great new titles coming to the streaming giant’s service in January, there’s almost just as many that will expire. Now’s a good time to stop procrastinating and finally get around to checking out some of those 30 For 30 specials, or maybe binge-watch every season Murder, She Wrote (you can knock out 12 seasons of Jessica Fletcher in two weeks, right?). January also sees the exit of teen classics like Bring It On and Sixteen Candles, which sounds like a great Saturday night double feature — but you only have a few more weeks to make that happen.

Oscars Shake-Up Moves ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Loving’ Into Adapted Screenplay Category

In these weeks before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences convenes to slaughter their sacrificial calf and read the blood spatter patterns to determine this year’s nominees, there’s been quite a bit of category rejiggering. Everyone wants some gold, and because some races are more easily won, crafty studios have been determining the most advantageous way to shape their For Your Consideration campaigns. Viola Davis, for instance, probably could have competed in the Best Actress category for her titanic performance as the long-suffering wife in Denzel Washington’s adaptation of Fences. But with the 2016 Best Actress scramble already approaching a de facto showdown between La La Land‘s Emma Stone and Jackie‘s Natalie Portman, Davis smartly ended up in consideration for Best Supporting Actress.

Alec Baldwin Is So Excited For You to Watch ‘The Boss Baby’ Trailer, Really

It’s not uncommon for stars to speak for a moment or two before a trailer for their upcoming film, hyping the release a touch while lending their celebrity directly to the proceedings. Especially for animated projects such as the upcoming The Boss Baby, it’s helpful to see the talent’s face as a reassurance of the film’s pedigree. But it almost looks like the Academy Award-nominated actor is trying to hold a straight face when he reads the words, “You are seconds away from seeing a sneak peek of Dreamwork’s new animated film The Boss Baby. I’m so excited for you. Really.” That little “really” tacked on to the end makes it sound like he’s got something to prove. Baldwin knows exactly what he’s gotten himself into. He knows how the phrase “The Boss Baby, starring Alec Baldwin” sounds.

ARRIVAL
Paramount

There Are 146 Scores Eligible for an Oscar, but ‘Arrival,’ ‘Manchester,’ and ‘Silence’ Disqualified

On Tuesday, the Academy released their list of all the film scores eligible for a Best Original Score Oscar this year, but three of 2016’s biggest movies were absent. Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, and Martin Scorsese’s Silence were all shut out of the competition because the first two used pre-existing music, and the last wasn’t deemed “substantial” enough.

Sony Gets in the Lin-Manuel Miranda Business With Animated Musical ‘Vivo’

Sorry, Disney — you can’t have Lin-Manuel Miranda all to yourself anymore. The Hamilton creator has been diversifying his studio interests, recently getting behind an upcoming television adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy. ‘Collateral Beauty’ Review: Beautiful? Yeah, No.

This review contains basic plot details for Collateral Beauty which for some reason were not included in the movie’s trailer. If you don’t want to know the movie’s basic premise, don’t read this article. I would also recommend not seeing the movie, but that’s up to you.

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Cruella’ Movie With Emma Stone Eyes ‘Mozart in the Jungle’ Co-Creator to Direct

Disney is taking another one of the many (many, many, many) live-action projects from their growing to-do pile and officially placing it in the queue, as the studio appears to have found a director for their long-developing Cruella project. Like Maleficent, this one offers a bit of a twist, re-imagining the classic 101 Dalmatians story through the eyes of its villain, Cruella De Vil, with Emma Stone set to play the titular role.

‘Lion King,’ ‘Princess Bride,’ More Added to the National Film Registry

The one good thing that the United States Congress has ever done was pass the National Film Preservation Act in 1988, establishing a National Film Registry in the Library of Congress wherein moving pictures deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” can be securely preserved. The National Film Preservation Board can induct up to 25 new entries into the archives each year, and today Deadline brings the news of which movies will effectively achieve immortality as the Class of 2016. Lots of enduring, worthy works have made the cut, though it is with a solemn heart that I must once again report the egregious continued snub of Pauly Shore comedy vehicle Bio-Dome.
