Ex Machina provided the first real upset of the 2016 Oscars beating out heavy favorite Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Best Visual Effects. In addition to Star Wars, Ex Machina beat out fellow nominees Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant and The Martian.

The win was remarkably in part because Ex Machina’s entire budget was $15 million, which probably was the craft services budget on The Force Awakens. You’d have to go back years and years and years to find a film that won the Best Visual Effects Oscar with such a low budget.

While some thought that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could be a late candidate for Best Picture at the Oscars, it wound up not making the cut. Despite that, the film earned a total of five nominations, the most for any Star Wars film since the original received 10 nominations in 1977, but that wasn’t enough to win in its most favored category.
