Jonah Hill to Make a Nostalgic Directorial Debut With ‘Mid-90s’

Jonah Hill is the latest thespian to transition behind the camera, joining famous friends like Seth Rogen and James Franco in making the switch from actor to director. It seems only fitting that the actor who got his big break in the coming-of-age high school comedy Superbad would make his directorial debut with a coming-of-age film of his own, based on a script he also wrote.

THR reports that Hill is gearing up to make his big directorial debut on Mid-90s, a film set during — you’ll never believe it — the mid-90s. The story takes place in California and centers on a group of teens “trying to navigate drinking, drugs, fighting, sex, looking cool, and fitting in,” all while making some highly-questionable choices, of course. The description sounds like your average coming-of-age high school narrative (and that particular description calls to mind Gia Coppola’s debut, Palo Alto), but Hill is sure to put his own stamp on the project, which is being described as a dramedy.

Hill previously co-wrote the script for 21 Jump Street and wrote for the animated series Allen Gregory, which he also created. The actor recently appeared in Hail, Caesar! and lends his voice to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s R-rated animated bizarro-fest Sausage Party (you can read our review of that here). Though he’s been a bit scarce as of late, Hill is set to reprise his role as Schmidt in 23 Jump Street, which will feature a Men in Black reboot / crossover, and appears next opposite Miles Teller in Todd Phillips’ War Dogs.
