Yesterday, a brief partial trailer for a full-length trailer (itself a partial-length version of the full-length movie) arrived online in promotion of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, the latest spinoff of the LEGO Movie franchise more recently expanded with The LEGO Batman Movie. It gave us a brief preview of the design of the land of Ninjago, a block-built utopia wth Eastern influences that superficially resembles Tokyo. But today, we’ll get a fuller look at the new world in which this film takes place, and the scrappy little figurines that populate it as well.

Dave Franco lends his voice to Lloyd (you pronounce both L’s), one of a cadre of ninjas enjoying the life of martial arts in the land of Ninjago. Along with compatriots voiced by Michael Peña, Portlandia’s Fred Armisen, Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson, and Silicon Valley’s Zach Woods and Kumail Nanjiani, they keep the streets clean of crime and hone their skills under their sensei Wu (Jackie Chan, appropriately). But the evil lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux) has come to terrorize them all and eradicate the ninjas forever, so that he may take control of the city. The twist, which isn’t really a twist both because it’s revealed in the trailer and because the chief theme appears to be the bond between a child and his estranged parent, is that Garmadon and Lloyd have a familial link.

Apart from that, we‘ve got the usually zippy humor (the bride vowing to start her life anew while her groom calls for her to come help him is a great gag) and the visually innovative animation that we’ve come to expect from this many-pronged franchise. Kids these days are just so spoiled.
