A Midland police officer is recovering after a drunk driver hit his patrol car as he was on his way to an incident called in to police.

According to NewsWest 9, 24-year-old Xavier Ramon was travelling south on Midland Drive early Saturday morning when he was hit by 31-year old Jose Garcia traveling west on Anetta Drive.

Garcia disregarded the stop sign and continued into the intersection where he t-boned Officer Ramon. The collision was so powerful it pushed Ramon's squad car out of the intersection and into a house on the corner where it caught on fire.

Garcia tried to flee but was held by witnesses until police could reach the scene. The fire department arrived on the scene and got the jaws of life out to free Ramon from the car.

Ramon is stated as having serious but non-life threatening injuries. Garcia was treated and released from the hospital and charged with intoxication assault on a peace officer.
