Celebrities can run, but it seems they can no longer hide from the scarily omniscient presence of the paparazzi.

Thanks to the lightning-fast development of affordable technology, the photog business has gotten its hands on drones that can be flown through the air by remote control (via People).

What does that mean for celebrities? Well, drones can capture photos where a paparazzo on the ground can’t. Drones can fly above crowds, across streets and over homes — places where safety or security reasons might keep actual photographers from entering.

Last month, Miley Cyrus posted a video to Instagram of a drone flying above her, potentially to snap photos of the ‘Bangerz’ star. She captioned the vid, “Drone Pap wtf.”

Selena Gomez was also the target of a pap drone, according to a photog that needed an alternative way to grab shots of the singer. “They tried to stop us from taking pictures … and we said, ‘You know what? Release the drone,’” he said in a 247paps video. “When there is a lot of fandemonium and people are trying to block us, we’ll send a drone up and get great footage.”

According to TMZKanye West mentioned his fear of drones in the deposition for his assault case stemming from his attack of a paparazzo — the same depo where he compared celebs fighting for rights in present day to African Americans fighting for rights in the ’60s.

He asked the lawyer, “Is your daughter stalked by, like drones? Are there drones flying where she’s trying to learn how to swim at age one?” He continued, “What happens if a drone falls right next to her? Would it electrocute her? … Could it fall and hit her if that paparazzi doesn’t understand how to remote control the drone over their house?”

Kanye makes a fair point. Luckily, California state senator Alex Padilla agrees that drone usage needs to be restricted.

“We have enough paparazzi issues as it is,” the politician told People. “We certainly don’t need drones with cameras or video recorders hovering over nightclubs, restaurants or the streets of L.A.”

Sen. Padilla is heading a bill in the California State Senate that calls for limitations of drone usage. His wish is that celebrities will lend their support to the bill to bring publicity to the issue.
