The Earth is currently being bombarded by material thrown off from the sun, giving some folks a view of the Northern Lights they haven't seen in years.

Earlier this week, the sun experienced a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) aimed directly at planet Earth, which gave people in the northern US a view of the Northern Lights they had not seen in years.

Kp is an excellent indicator of disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field and is used by SWPC to decide whether geomagnetic alerts and warnings need to be issued for users who are affected by these disturbances.
