Last Thursday the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the construction of a new waste facility east of Andrews.

According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram, public comment meetings will be held during the month of February to get the public involved in the project.

The site has the potential to store 40,000 metric tons of uranium from decommissioned nuclear plants located all over the country.

The site would only maintain the waste for up to 40 years until a permanent disposal site is decided on by the federal govenment.

The NRC's public comment meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • February 13, 2017 in Hobbs at the Lea County Convention Center located at 5101 Lovington Hwy. from 7pm-10pm MST.
  • February 13, 2017 in Andrews at the James Roberts Center located at 855 State Hwy. 176 from 7pm-10pm CST.
