Odessa City Council approved the expansion of University Blvd. which will require homes along that stretch of road to be purchased by the city.

According to the Odessa American, the goal of the expansion is to make University safer since many of the areas do not have turn lanes and that is responsible for many accidents.

The city council approved to purchase the properties along that stretch of University west of Grandview in their meeting on Tuesday and they expect to reach agreements with the property owners, but if not they will use eminent domain to go ahead with the widening project.

City officials say most of the property owners have agreed to the terms on their property and only a few have not responded yet to the offers.

The city hopes to get all property deals made so they do not have to exercise eminent domain and to begin construction on the widening project later this year.
